Introducing our first Patron, Shelley Craft!

Channel Nine personality Shelley Craft first became involved in Assist A Sista as a volunteer responding to a shout out on facebook requesting furniture for a Haven. Shelley couldn’t believe that domestic violence affects over 500,000 Australian women each year and after hearing that in the first three months of this year in Queensland alone, the refuge received nearly 5000 calls, Shelley didn't hesitate to say yes when approached to become a patron.

“We have to shift the shame and empower the victims in these situations. I am so blessed to have the life I do. My children, husband and extended family are everything to me and I want to give back and help these women rebuild their lives and stay strong and brave. Once the families have been assisted by the refuge to source accommodation they usually turn up to their new home to find it bare and to see the confidence and strength that Assist A Sista provide these women by creating a 'haven' is overwhelming.

The girls co-ordinate and supply everything from the basic necessities to furniture for every room plus linen, kitchenware and toiletries etc. I believe every woman deserves not just a home but a safe and inviting haven and I am privileged to be a part of this movement.”

“Shelley is the perfect fit to help promote our charity” said Assist A Sista co-founder Nicolle.

“She is vivacious, strong, family orientated and overall generous, and combined with her high profile work with renovation shows such as The Block and Domestic Blitz we knew that she was right.” Co-founder Manuela agrees, “From our first meeting with Shelley we were encouraged by her enthusiasm and sincerity. Domestic and family violence is at intolerable levels here in Australia and through a practical hands on approach and our partnership with Shelley we are driving national awareness and erasing the stigma surrounding domestic violence.”

Words to live by...

Words to live by

"Carpe Diem..Seize the day! My dream is to see apathy and inequality stamped out of our society, so each day I strive to live by what I believe in. I choose to surround myself with colourful, passionate human beings who care. This is Australia, the country where dreams flourish and simple folk can rise up and make a difference in society. Women and Men everywhere can choose to RISE UP AND JOIN THE MOVEMENT to break the cycle of domestic violence. Let's unite against injustice, speak out for the voices struggling to be heard. Look outwards and see what is happening around us. Let's SPEAK UP and RISE UP. It's time to make a difference - because we can!"

"Live life, give graciously and be kind to yourself. A big influence in my life was my maternal grandmother, who not only being the Matriach in the family, was always hardworking and an amazing role model to us as children right through to adulthood. another was Princess Diana, her unselfishness, courage and hard work, facing many challenges, she continued to inspire everyone around her, a true role model to everyone young and old."
